Autumn UK tour rescheduled

Unfortunately, due to the ongoing Coronavirus Pandemic and restrictions on live concerts, we need to consider everyone’s welfare and therefore have no choice but to defer the planned autumn UK tour until the spring next year. The tour will now take place from late March to the end of April.

As you can imagine, with numerous other artists wanting to reschedule their tours in that period, the dates available at the venues were limited and this has meant that, in some cases, the equivalent day of the week to the original date wasn’t always free. For example, the original Friday and Saturday at Glasgow have now become a Thursday and Friday instead, with Aberdeen moving to the Saturday. Sadly, the Cardiff Motorpoint Arena show has been moved to the Cardiff Great Hall instead due to availability issues but all the original dates have been rearranged with the addition of a new gig in Warrington. The two Brixton shows on the 16th & 17th of April mark the exact 44th anniversary of the band’s first headline shows at the Roundhouse on the Rattus tour back in ’77. Tickets for the original dates are all valid for the rescheduled shows and, for Glasgow, a Friday ticket will now be for the Thursday and Saturday for the new Friday date. Special guests will be Ruts DC for all dates (and Mike Peters at Cardiff as well).

The tour, which is dedicated to Dave, kicks off on his birthday, the 29th of March, in Lincoln. It was also decided that the tour should finish at the Corn Exchange in Dave’s adopted hometown of Cambridge, a fitting finale to the tour.

Apologies for any inconvenience that the rescheduling of the tour causes but circumstances are clearly out of our control. See you on the road in 2021

Full Final UK Tour And Album Update

Dave’s death has been an absolute tragedy and mere words cannot describe our deep sense of loss and the sheer, raw emotion that we have felt over the past month. Dave was our dear friend and band mate and we will miss him forever. The loss has had an absolutely devastating effect on us as a band and we’ve spent a lot of time in reflection and discussing the future. We had all been working on recording a new album, much of which is ready to mix. Dave was, of course, an integral part of our work on this new material and, therefore, we fully intend to bring the project to fruition as soon as we can get back together.

We have also been thinking of you, our fans. We have read the many posts and messages with regard to the Final Full Tour and, after much discussion, we have decided to proceed with the shows in Dave’s honour. Dave was very much looking forward to this being our final, full outing so we believe it’s the most suitably fitting way for all of us together to say goodbye.

JJ, Baz and Jim.

A message from Pam Greenfield

We have received this from Pam:

Hi, Pam here…I’m finding this very hard to write. Firstly, thank you all for the kind words & tributes for Dave, he would’ve been so very touched. Secondly, thanks so very much for the lovely condolences, cards and letters that have been sent to me over the last few weeks. They are greatly cherished and will always be remembered and saved. As the official Facebook page has said, this is a very private, sad time for all of us and they have done his best to emphasise this. However, it has come to my attention that some people have posted on social media video/s of Dave’s funeral cortège. Through the help of friends a lot of this has been removed, unfortunately, I know it has been shared. I ask in your kindness to remove any/all links of anything relating to this be deleted, expunged & never to be seen by anyone ever again, please. I know you are all grieving in your own way, but so am I, please don’t make it more difficult for me, the band and Dave’s closest friends. Thanks for making this happen. Pam

We ask you to abide by Pam’s request above. We will remove any such posts on the official Facebook page and will block the poster permanently. We ask other moderators of Stranglers related Facebook pages to do the same. Thank you Stranglers HQ

Dave Greenfield's funeral

Dave has made his final journey. His funeral took place today, the 18th May 2020, at 3.30pm near his Cambridgeshire home. It was a private ceremony, through both choice and, sadly, necessity due to Covid 19 restrictions. Those friends and family who were unable to attend in person were able to view the service on line. Baz was present to pay his own tribute and those from the rest of the band were read during the ceremony, as they were unable to attend. The choice of music for the ceremony reflected Dave’s life and his 35 year marriage to Pam. Sadly, on Sunday, some details were posted online giving the starting point of the funeral cortege and Pam has asked us to pass on her thanks to those who respected the privacy request and stayed away. Pam has also asked us to pass on her thanks for the numerous messages of condolence that she has received and for the generous donations to the chosen charities. If you would like to, please take time out to listen to The Stranglers’ 1979 classic Ice, which features a classic Dave keyboard line and also had a deep personal meaning to Dave and Pam. Fond adieu, fly straight Dave xxx

Dave Greenfield - In Memoriam

Since the announcement of Dave’s untimely passing earlier this week, thousands of messages of condolence have been flooding in by email and across social media. For example, Facebook alone had some 8,000 comments on the post as well as numerous private messages. We thought that it would be a fitting gesture to collate some of those messages together to pay tribute to Dave and to demonstrate the affection for him as well as the admiration of his musical prowess. We can’t post all of the messages that were received so we have limited it to the tributes from current and former band mates, crew, management, fellow musicians and friends/public figures… Continue reading Dave Greenfield – In Memoriam

In memory of Dave...

Thank you to all the FamilyinBlack around the world for all the messages of condolence, kind words and support following the untimely passing of Dave Greenfield. Dave’s funeral will be a private affair, but fans have asked if they could send flowers or make a donation. Pam has asked for no flowers but has, with the band’s friend, Bruce Daniels, set up two donation pages for the charities she wishes to support in memory of Dave – The British Heart Foundation and Wood Green Animal Shelter. If you would like to make a donation to either charity click here for BHF or here for Wood Green. Thank you x

Updated 26/05/20-thanks to fans around the world for their generous donations to the chosen charities in memory of Dave. The total raised is over £12,500 for the BHF and Wood Green! What an amazing combined gesture. Both donation pages are still live if you would make a donation. Thanks on behalf of Pam x

David Paul Greenfield (29/3/49-3/5/20)

We are deeply and profoundly saddened to announce the untimely passing of keyboard legend Dave Greenfield on the evening of 3rd May 2020. Following a stay in hospital for heart problems, Dave tested positive for the Covid-19 virus last Sunday but he sadly lost his battle last night. Dave had been an ever present in the band since joining in late 1975 and his keyboard wizardry was world-renowned over his 45 year career in The Stranglers. Dave was a lovable, friendly and eccentric character who always had time to chat.

We have received the following tributes from Dave’s fellow band members JJ, Jet and Baz as well as Sil the band’s manager:

“On the evening of Sunday May 3rd my great friend and longstanding colleague of 45 years, the musical genius that was Dave Greenfield, passed away as one of the victims of the Great Pandemic of 2020. All of us in the worldwide Stranglers’ family grieve and send our sincerest condolences to Pam.” – JJ Burnel

“We have just lost a dear friend and music genius, and so has the whole world. Dave was a complete natural in music. Together, we toured the globe endlessly and it was clear he was adored by millions. A huge talent, a great loss, he is dearly missed.” – Jet Black

“We lost a true innovator, musical legend, and one of my dearest friends today. The word genius is bandied around far too easily in this day and age, but Dave Greenfield certainly was one. We stood together on the same side of the stage for 20 years, laughed, joked and shared our lives in the way that only band mates can. I’ll miss him forever. Our thoughts and hearts are with his wife Pam, and to the millions of fans who worshipped at his altar, he’ll never be equalled.” – Baz Warne

“We are all in shock, Dave was a kind, generous soul who had time for anyone and everyone and it has been my privilege to have known him as both a close friend, his tech and manager for over 40 years. Our thoughts are with Pam at this sad time” – Sil Willcox

He is survived by his wife Pam and we ask you to respect Pam’s privacy at this very sad time.

Fly straight Mr G, fond adieu xx
